The candidate will have an interest, commitment and enthusiasm to high quality obstetric care including antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care and in addition will run, along with a second Obstetrician, the Maternal Medicine Service. The successful candidate will have a role in the care of women who experience perinatal loss, working closely with the Bereavement Midwives and the Fetal Medicine Lead and will participate in national initiatives to reduce the perinatal mortality rates.

The successful applicant will undertake clinical work delivering obstetric care to the highest standard at the RCH and other sites across the county. Outpatient clinics and operating lists are also held at a variety of peripheral units in Penzance (West Cornwall), Falmouth, Redruth, St. Austell, Newquay and Bodmin.

RCHT provides the maternity service for the majority of residents in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and delivers approximately 4,500 women making it one of the busiest maternity units in the South West peninsula. Antenatal and postnatal care is provided in a variety of settings and locations including Health Centres, GP Practices, Children’s’ Centres, the Birth Centres and at home.

The specialty is actively involved in the delivery of the education programme of the Exeter University Medical School.

Cornwall is a beautiful county which offers an outstanding quality of life and providing many opportunities for outdoor activities, with its sailing waters, surfing beaches and rugged coastal pathways for walking, and cycling. There is a thriving arts and theatre scene as well as an interesting variety of eating places, including celebrity-owned restaurants within Cornwall.  The major route both in and out of the county is the A30 which connects with the M5 motorway at Exeter.  There is an excellent rail service with daily passenger and sleeper services and an airport at Newquay with daily connections to many cities throughout the UK and abroad.
