Applications are invited for the post of Locum Consultant in Medical Microbiology at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro. Applications from candidates with dual Microbiology/Infectious Diseases training are encouraged, to support developments in the Infection Service. This post is a replacement full time post as one of four consultants.

The Department of Clinical Microbiology at the Royal Cornwall Hospital (RCH) operates as a friendly and cohesive team providing a full range of diagnostic and clinical services to the acute and community sectors in Cornwall.  The relative isolation and large population served by the department means that a larger and more complete range of services is offered than in many similarly sized units. The Infection Prevention and Control service is housed in the laboratory.

The department is housed in a spacious, modern, purpose-built facility. It processes around 350,000 specimens annually and serves a population of 410,000 people.  Over recent years we have invested in IT, automated technology and molecular diagnostics and high quality staff to run them.  A pan-pathology managed laboratory service is due to start next year, ensuring continuing local NHS management of the service.

The post offers many opportunities for motivated applicants:

  • Excellent work/life balance. We are based in Cathedral city of Truro at the centre of the Cornish peninsula. The surrounding countryside is renowned for its spectacular rural and coastal scenery.  There is a vibrant cultural life, fantastic recreational opportunities and first-class education from Primary school to University level.
  • Academic/teaching. The University of Exeter Medical School is based on the RCH site. The department has a strong record of undergraduate teaching and hosts medical students and Foundation doctors.
  • Research. Members of the department are active in research with clinical colleagues and the European Centre for Environment and human Health, also based on the RCH site.
  • Communications. Newquay airport offers frequent flights (
  • A generous relocation package is available.

The post is offered full time as 10 PAs, with an additional PA available by agreement with the Trust.

Applicants are required to hold FRCPath or equivalent and be GMC registered. Applications are welcomed from those unable to work full time for personal reasons or those wishing to job-share.
