Consultant in Anaesthetics with an interest in Trauma

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in Trauma at the Royal Cornwall Hospital Truro.

We deliver over 30000 anaesthetics per annum in most surgical specialities, critical care and pain management to the 550 000 population of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly; based in Truro, and also incorporating two peripheral hospitals in Hayle (St Michael’s Hospital) and Penzance (West Cornwall Hospital).

We are a large district general hospital and retain specialist services that are being centralised in other regions.  Our case-mix is varied, suitably challenging, and progressively interesting.

We are looking for Consultants in Anaesthesia with a broad range of skills to become an active member of a flexible team.  Particular experience or expertise in pre-assessment and peri-operative medicine, obstetric anaesthesia, head and neck anaesthesia and trauma, including vascular anaesthesia, would be most attractive. Wider skills in audit and governance, regional anaesthesia or management and leadership would be particularly desirable. Our on-call commitment has evolved to provide the highest quality consultant delivered service whilst responsive to work-life balance.  1 in 20 non-resident on call.

The Royal Cornwall Hospital is a campus of Exeter Medical School, and provides opportunity for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Clinical fellowships in varied anaesthesia disciplines are well established and highly regarded. Our trainees are actively supported in the local Research Network. We are a busy Major Trauma Unit with close interactive relationships with Cornwall Air Ambulance.

We believe success derives from a dedicated high quality substantive workforce with the ultimate work-life balance in the best location in the UK. We have invested actively in coaching and mentoring provision. We’d like you to share our passion for clinician shaped services and welcome you to augment our team.

Cornwall is a beautiful county which offers an outstanding quality of life and providing many opportunities for outdoor activities, with its sailing waters, surfing beaches and rugged coastal pathways for walking, and cycling.  There is a thriving arts and theatre scene as well as an interesting variety of eating places, including celebrity-owned restaurants within Cornwall.  The major route both in and out of the county is the A30 which connects with the M5 motorway at Exeter.  There is an excellent rail service with daily passenger and sleeper services and an airport at Newquay with daily connections to many cities throughout the UK and abroad.

For new substantive consultants the job plan for these posts will include 2.5 SPAs for the first year.

Applicants are required to be on the GMC Specialist Register, or within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / EU equivalent certification at the time of interview.  Applications are welcomed from those unable to work full time for personal reasons or those wishing to job-share.
